Season 7: Orison (7X07)

Written by: Chip Johannessen
Directed by: Rob Bowman

Reverend Orison leads a service with a group of inmates in the chapel at the Marion maximum security penitentiary in Illinois. During the service his cries of "Glory, amen," are answered by the inmates stomping their feet in unison. Among the congregation is Donnie Pfaster.

After the service one of the prisoners, Brigham catches his fingers in an electric saw while working in the garment machine shop. With the guards and other inmates attending to Brigham, Donnie Pfaster escapes. Mulder and Scully as the agents who caught Donnie Pfaster, a death fetishist, in the first place are called in to help track him down.

Mulder suggests to Scully that she should remove herself from the case, considering her past history with Pfaster, but Scully is adamant that she should be with her partner. They interview Brigham, who is uninjured despite the accident that everyone witnessed, Brigham suggests it is a miracle. But Mulder recognises his use of of the phrase "Glory, amen," and the unconscious tapping of his feet as evidence of post hypnotic suggestion.

Suspicion soon falls on the Reverend Orison, Mulder belives he has the ability through ancient chants to induce mass hypnosis, enabling the inmates to escape unnoticed. Reverend Orison believes he is making amends for the time in his life when he was acquitted for a murder that he did commit. However it appears there are wider implication to his actions. Donnie Pfaster abuses his freedom to hunt down the one victim who eluded him, Scully.

Notes:
The definition of 'Orison' is "A Prayer".

The song that plays often through out the episode is "Don't Look Any Further" by Dennis Edwards & Siedah Garrett.

Quotes:
Marshall Daddo: He's a sick man.
Mulder: Sick would describe him. We found women's fingers in his freezer. He liked to eat them with his peas and carrots.
Marshall Daddo: So it's just women he's after?
Mulder: Just women. Been five years in here thinking about only that. I'm sure he's worked up quite an appetite.
Marshall Daddo: I happen to know you two agents have a particular forte — a thing for... what is it called? The supernatural? Now, the circumstances of the escape...
Scully: I promise you there is nothing supernatural about this man. Donnie Pfaster is just plain evil.

Mulder: Post-hypnotic suggestion. Did you see him?
Scully: You mean, did I see him raise his foot? Yes, I saw that.
Mulder: A programmed behaviour prompted and manifested by suggestion in this case, a rhythmic motion of the hands producing a unconscious act in a conscious state. (He raises and lowers his hand in front of Scully) Doesn't work on you.
Scully: I know what hypnosis is, Mulder.
Mulder: Group hypnosis.
Scully: If you're suggesting that Donnie Pfaster escaped from prison using a technique from a Vegas lounge act I'd think again.
Mulder: Mesmer was able to hypnotise and command entire audiences.
Scully: So, how would Donnie have acquired this amazing ability?
Mulder: I'm not saying that it was Donnie.
Scully: Well, then, who?
Mulder: Three inmates are missing from three separate prisons. One man has had possible contact with each of those cons. The prison chaplain. Glory. Amen. Not god, the chaplain. Scully, what?
Scully: That song — can you hear that?
Mulder: Barely.
Scully: I haven't heard that song since high school. That's the second time I've heard it in the last hour.
Mulder: Well, I think if it was a make out song I think it'd be ruined forever now, huh?

Reverend Orison: What is this?
Mulder: Blood of the lamb, Reverend. Handiwork of Mr Donnie Pfaster — a young girl he picked up at the bus stop.
Reverend Orison: Oh, Lord.
Mulder: Where is he, Reverend?
Reverend Orison: He took my car. She wasn't supposed to die.
Mulder: No. Donnie was supposed to die. You were supposed to kill him. That's why you freed him. God knows you're capable of it. (to Scully) The Reverend Orison is really Robert Gailen Orison — convicted in 1959 of first degree murder. Served 22 years in Soledad.
Reverend Orison: God spoke to me. He told me to look after Donnie.
Mulder: When god spoke to you, Reverend, did He happen to mention where Donnie was headed?

Scully: Go back to hell!
Donald Pfaster: Who does your nails, girly girl?
Scully: Let me go! The only reason why you're alive is because I asked the judge for life! The only reason why you're alive is because we didn't kill you when we could!
Donald Pfaster: You're the one that got away. You're all I think about.
Scully: I'm a federal agent. You do anything to me and they will not give you a break this time.
Donald Pfaster: I'm going to run you a bath.

Season 2: Anasazi (2X25)

Story by: David Duchovny and Chris Carter
Teleplay by: Chris Carter
Director: R. W. Goodwin

When the newest member of the The Lone Gunman, the Thinker, hacks into the Defense Department's secret files on extraterrestrial life and he gives the Dat tape to Mulder to expose the truth. Mulder who has been suffering from sleeping problems is at first disappointed to find that the information is encrypted, but Scully recognises it as Navajo code used during World War II. Mulder is called to Assistant Director Skinner's office and questioned about the Dat tape, but Mulder punches Skinner.

Mulder can not explain why he hit Skinner and Scully is alarmed at his behaviour. The Cigarette Smoking Man is also working to recover the Dat tape and visits Bill Mulder, they used to work together at the State Department and information on the tape implicates Bill Mulder. He contacts Mulder to come and see him, ready to tell his son the truth about his work. However Krycek kills him before he can tell Mulder anything.

Mulder finds Krycek sneaking around his apartment building and they fight. Scully has to shoot Mulder in the shoulder to stop him from killing Krycek. Mulder wakes up in New Mexico and Scully explains that the water in his building was contaminated with LSD, which caused his psychosis. She introduces Navajo code talker Albert Hosteen who is decoding the files. Mulder is taken to a boxcar buried in the desert and discovers alien bodies inside. However the Cigarette Smoking Man's men arrive and destroy the boxcar with Mulder in it.

Notes:
Renae Morriseau previously appeared in Season 1 ''Shapes'' as Gwen.

In order to recreate the distinct New Mexico landscape, a rock quarry was painted with over 1,600 gallons of red paint.

Albert Hosteen's statements about the "Anasazi" are inaccurate. The name "Anasazi" is Navajo for "ancient enemies" -- it could loosely be interpreted as "aliens", in the sense of "not-like-us", but not in the X-Files sense. As to his assertion that "No evidence of their fate exists", the Hopis, who are Pueblo Indians, have a different name for the Anasazi. They call them "ancestral Puebloans".

A scene in which The Thinker is kidnapped by men-in-black was cut from the final version of the episode.

Chris Carter makes his first acting appearance as the FBI Agent who asks Scully if she would lie to protect Mulder.

Director and Executive Producer R.W. Goodwin also had a cameo in this episode, as a gardener. Unfortunately his scene ended up on the cutting-room floor.

Quotes:
CSM: What is this?
Skinner: This is where you pucker up and kiss my ass... This man's name is Albert Hosteen - you should remember that, because if Agents Mulder or Scully come down with so much as a case of the flu, Albert is prepared to recite chapter and verse, file for file, everything that is on your precious tape. I'm sure you're thinking that Albert's an old man and there are plenty of ways you might kill him too. Which is why in the ancient oral tradition of his people, he's told twenty other men the information in those files. So unless you kill every Navajo living in four states, that information is available with a simple phone call. Welcome to the wonderful world of high technology.

Scully: They called me in today.
Mulder: What did you tell them?
Scully: That nothing was wrong.
Mulder: Well, you told them the truth then.
Scully: Mulder, you opened the door for them, they're just looking for a good reason now.
Mulder: Okay, I'll say I'm sorry.
Scully: Mulder, these files. Who knows you have them?
Mulder: Why?
Scully: Because I had to lie today. And I put my job in jeopardy in order to do so. If they find out about those files...
Mulder: How would they find out?
Scully: Maybe they already know. The question is, is it worth it? Is this cassette worth risking everything?
Mulder: I'll tell you when I find out what's on it. Now just tell me who I can talk to about breaking that code!
Scully: I'm meeting with someone in an hour. I might know something later tonight... I just need some kind of assurance that they're not going to let us hang ourselves with this! That I'm doing the right thing.
Mulder: I'll try to find out. (He tapes an 'X' to the window)
Scully: I need to know one more thing Mulder. Why did you attack Skinner?
Mulder: I've thought about that Scully. I honestly can't say.

Bill Mulder: You're going to learn of things, Fox. You're going to hear the words and they'll come to make sense to you.

(Mulder's cell phone rings, and he answers it. It's CSM.)
CSM: You're a hard man to reach.
Mulder: Obviously, not hard enough apparently.
CSM: Where are you?
Mulder: I'm at the Betty Ford center, where are you?

Mulder: Are you familiar with the ten commandments, Scully?
Scully: You want me to recite them?
Mulder: No. Just number 4, the one about obeying the sabbath, the part about where God made Heaven and Earth but didn't bother to tell anybody about his side projects.
Scully: What are you talking about?
Mulder: The biggest lie of all.

Season 2: Our Town (2X24)

Writer: Frank Spotnitz
Director: Rob Bowman

Mulder and Scully travel to Dudley, Arkansas to investigate the disappearance of Federal Poultry Inspector, George Kearns. Aided by Sheriff Arens, they examine a field where witnesses reported seeing fox-fire on the night Kearns went missing. Mulder suggests some sort of ceremony took place in the field, but the Sheriff dismisses it as an illegal trash burn, nothing more. The interview Kearn's wife who tells they that he probably ran off with a younger woman. The Agents visit the local Chaco Chicken processing plant, which Kearns was about to recommend be closed down due to health violations.

While they are there one of the workers, Paula Gray goes crazy and takes her supervisor hostage but Sheriff Arens shoots her dead. Mulder and Scully visit the plant's owner Walter Chaco, Paula was his granddaughter, they request permission to do an autopsy on her and he agrees. Scully discovers signs that Paula was suffering from Crutzfelt-Jacob's disease, the rare but non contagious disease that Kearns had. She also discovers that Paula is forty-seven old, however she looks to be in her early twenties. When a statistically impossible number of the local population also contract Crutzfelt-Jacob's disease, Mulder begins to get suspicious. He orders the dredging of a local river used as run out from the plant, which leads to the discovery of a number of mutilated skeletons. Mulder and Scully begin to suspect that chicken is not the staple diet of the local towns folk.

Notes:
Guest star Gabrielle Miller also appears in Season 3 episode "Syzygy" as Brenda J. Summerfield, whom the teen girl killers murder with flying glass from a mirror.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a fatal human form of mad cow's disease (BSE).

Almost every character in this episode was named after a real-life cannibal.

''Chaco Chicken'' was named for Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, where the Anasazi tribe lived and where boiled bones such as those depicted in the episode were uncovered.

Quotes:
Mulder: ... I remembered this, a documentary I saw in college about an insane asylum. It gave me nightmares.
Scully: I didn't think anything gave you nightmares.
Mulder: Eh, I was young.

Scully: All of these bodies share one strange detail, Mulder.
Mulder: Well, they seem to have lost their heads.

Season 2: Soft Light (2X23)

Writer: Vince Gilligan
Director: Jim Contner

Detective Kelly Ryan, one of Scully's ex-pupil at the academy asks for her assistance on her first ever case. Three people have vanished without a trace, the latest victim, Patrick Newirth disappeared from his locked hotel room leaving only a black smear on the floor near the door. Mulder toys with the idea of spontaneous human combustion. However when they discover that all three victims passed through the Richmond train station, Mulder and Scully review the station's security footage, a move rewarded when Mulder notices a man sitting at one spot in the station acting strangely.

On the video they can make out the badge he is wearing which leads them to a company called Polarity Magnetics. They show a photo of the man in the station to Dr Davey, who identifies him as his colleague Dr Ray Banton, who was researching dark matter. But Dr Banton has not been seen since he accidentally exposed himself to a massive amount of energy that burnt his shadow in to the wall. Mulder and Scully stake out the station and when Dr Banton appears, they attempt to arrest him.

Dr Banton warns them not to touch his shadow, Mulder realises that his shadow is deadly and arranges for him to be taken in to custody safely. However Detective Ryan and her department block Mulder and Scully from further access to Dr Banton. Frustrated Mulder contacts X about the case, but X tells him he can not help. Later X kidnaps Dr Banton and delivers him to a government laboratory to be tested on.

Notes:
Scully here completely rebuffs Mulders suggestion of Spontaneous Human Combustion, but in the season 6 episode 'Trevor' she is the one to mention SHC, claiming that there have been "several well-documented cases". Perhaps she has had a change of opinion.

When looking for a possible entry point to the hotel room, Scully checks out the small heating grate, remembering the events of season 1's ''Squeeze'' and ''Tooms''.

Actually in the show they say that Dr. Banton is composed of "dark matter" but then they mention "typical" known particles such as quarks, gluons, etc. which are all considered to our science as "normal" matter. If he really were composed of dark matter and it did have a devastating effect on normal matter, not only living beings would be affected, but everything.

Quotes:
Scully: Well, maybe the exposure affected his mind. Nonsensical repetitive behavior is a common trait of mental illness.
Mulder: You trying to tell me something?

Mulder: ... He believes the government is out to get him.
X: It's tax season. So do most Americans.

Season 2: F. Emasculata (2X22)

Writers: Chris Carter and Howard Gordon
Director: Rob Bowman

When Assistant Director Skinner assigns agents Mulder and Scully to assist the Federal Marshals office in a man hunt for two escaped prisoners, they are confused about the reasons for the involvement of the FBI. On their arrival at Cumberland State Correctional Facility, Scully discovers a break out of a highly contagious and deadly disease in the prison. She questions Dr Osbourne, who claims to be from the Centre for Disease Control. A flu-like condition has claimed the lives of ten inmates and the two escaped prisoners may also be infected.

As Scully enters the prison to see if she can help. Mulder joins the man hunt to track down the two fugitives before they contaminate the public. Further investigation by Scully reveals that patient zero, Bobby Terence received a package from Pinck Pharmaceutical just before the contagion broke out. Dr Osbourne, who works for Pinck Pharmaceutical not the CDC, is accidentally infected and near death explains to Scully that the company funds exploration of rain forests for potential drug application.

One of their entomologists discovered an insect Faciophagia Emasculata, which carries a parasite that attacks the human immune system. Now the company and the government are attempting to cover up the fact that the prisoners were used as guinea pigs. When Mulder and Scully discover the involvement of the Cigarette Smoking Man, they suspect the whole incident is an attempt to eliminate them and debunk the X-files.

Notes:
925: the address of the prisoner's girlfriend is the birthdate of Gillian Anderson's daughter, Piper Maru.

The producers debated whether to delay the airdate because of its proximity to the release of the similarly themed movie ''Outbreak'' but ultimately decided that the episode stood on its own.

The title of this episode refers to the name of the insect carrying the infection, Faciphaga emasculata. Although this particular insect is fictitious, there are diseases with symptoms which resemble those depicted in this episode, such as myiasis, in which certain species of fly larvae grow under the skin and emerge from abcesses or boils. On the reality side of the story, scientists do hunt through rain forests for plants and insects for pharmaceutical research, like the unfortunate Dr. Torrance.

Quotes:
Mulder: I thought this was about escaped prisoners.
Scully: It is.
Mulder: Then who are the men in funny suits?

Skinner: You never had a chance, Agent Mulder. For every step you take, they're three steps ahead.
Mulder: Well, what about you?Where do you stand?
Skinner: I stand right on the line that you keep crossing.

Mulder: You can't protect the public by lying to them.
Cigarette-Smoking Man: It's done every day.

Season 2: The Calusari (2X21)

Writer: Sara Charno
Director: Mike Vejar

When two year old Teddy Holvey chases a balloon in to the path of an oncoming miniature train at the Lincoln amusement park, Virginia. A picture taken moments before the tragic accident shows the balloon moving against the wind, Mulder has the picture graphically enhanced, which reveals the shadowy figure of a child pulling the balloon along. Leading Mulder to believe that poltergeist might be involved.

Mulder and Scully go to Arlington to interview the boy's family. They speak with Steve and Maggie Holvey about their son's accident. Maggie is originally from Romania and her mother has been living with them since Teddy was born. They have another son, eight year old Charlie, his Grandmother is both protective and fearful of him, leading Scully to believe that it is a case of Munchausen's-by-proxy. A rare form of child abuse when a parent or guardian brings harm to the child to get attention. When Steve Holvey is later killed in a bizarre accident, ash from the scene is identified as a substance called Vibuti, holy ash produced during the presence of spiritual beings.

The Grandmother later dies while performing a protective ritual on Charlie and when a social worker questions Charlie about the incident, he claims his still born twin brother Michael killed her. Which comes as a shock to Maggie Holvey, who claims she never told Charlie about his dead twin brother. It appears that the families only hope is a strange group of Romanian elderly chanters called The Calusari.

Notes:
Joel Palmer (who plays Charlie/Michael Holvey) has previously appeared on The X-Files in the season 1 episode "Conduit''. In that particular episode he played the role of Kevin Morris.

When Charlie stands over his grandmother before her death, he speaks in Romanian: "You are too late to stop us".

Quotes:
Mulder: You see this a helium balloon here and the only thing I learned in kindergarten is when you let them go they float up, up and away. But you see, this is moving away from him. Horizontally.
Scully: Did you learn about wind in kindergarten?

Season 2: Humbug (2X20)

Writer: Darin Morgan
Director: Kim Manners

When Jerald Glazebrook aka 'Alligator Man' is attacked and killed in Gibsontown, Florida a retirement community for freaks and side show performers. It matches a pattern of forty-eight similar attacks spanning twenty-eight years all across the US. Someone working in circuses travelling from place to place across the US would be a primary suspect. Mulder and Scully investigate the recent attack in an attempt to catch the killer.

They meet with Sheriff Hamilton who fills them in on the case. Mulder is intrigued by a drawing by local artist Hepcat Helm of the Fiji Mermaid, an exhibit P.T. Barnum billed as a 'genuine fake' as it was supposedly a fish's tail sown on to the body of a monkey. When Hepcat Helm is later killed in his studio and the only access is via a very small window, Mulder theorises that the Fiji Mermaid is not only real but responsible for the murders. As they later discover that Sheriff Hamilton himself used to be Jim-Jim, the dog-faced boy and encounter other town residence like Dr Blockhead who performs human feats of endurance and The Conundrum, a tattooed jigsaw man who eats live animals.

Scully finds it difficult to find a normal suspect, in a place where nothing is normal. Her suspicions fall on trailer park porter Lanny's congealed twin Leonard, as Scully theorises that Leonard is capable of extracting himself from his brother's body. Lanny later confirms this but claims that Leonard does not mean to hurt people, he is merely searching for another brother.

Notes:
The situation with Lanny and his brother is known as asymmetric conjoined twins or parasitic twinning. In some cases both twins survive, in other cases the lesser twin is absorbed.by the other (inclusion twinning). In real life, there are no recorded cases of a parasitic twin able to leave the host twin. Scully's reference to Chang and Eng Bunker is evidently meant to also allude to Lanny's condition. Another parallel is the fact that both Chang and Lanny drank heavily, which was a contributing factor in both their deaths. Chang's drinking is a matter of historical record, and Lanny's is alluded to by Scully's mention of cirrhosis of the liver contributing to his death.

Gillian Anderson actually ate a live cricket during the filming of this episode, after a dare from performer Jim Rose. She was quite prepared to repeat the act on-camera, but the crew had already paid big money for a jar of edible chocolate crickets.

Michael J. Anderson (who plays Mr. Nutt) had previously starred with David Duchovny on ''Twin Peaks'' and in HBO's ''Carnivalé''.

Writer Darin Morgan remained on set during filming of this episode in order to make sure that his vision wouldn't get lost in the production process.

During the agents first meeting with Sheriff Hamilton in the restaurant, a small piece was deleted where they are served by a half man/half woman waiter played by Denis Simpson.

When Scully visits the museum and ends up paying extra to see an empty box, that was, in-fact, a real P.T. Barnum exhibit. Barnum displayed a sign that proudly pointed visitors to "The Egress", which people assumed led to another of the many oddities in the museum, but which actually led to an exit. Once outside, visitors had to pay again to re-enter the museum.

Jim Rose is a real life "stunt" performer, who is is quite legendary for this famous video "The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow" which features many famous blockhead and geek acts (many of which are very disturbing to watch).

Quotes:
Lanny: Occasionally, I'd say, 'ladies and gentlemen, I'd like you to meet my brother Leonard... Excuse him - he's shy'. Big laughs, I tell you. Big laughs.

Scully: That doesn't quite explain the potato.
Sheriff: I got, uh, some warts on my hand.
Mulder: ... That doesn't quite explain the potato.
Sheriff: To get rid of warts, you rub a sliced potato on your hand and bury it under a full moon.(Scully nods)
Sheriff: The investigation isn't going too well, is it?

Mulder: You know, Scully, hypertrichosis does not connote lycanthropy.
Scully: What are you implying?
Mulder: We're being highly discriminatory here. Just because a man was once afflicted with excessive hairiness, we've no reason to suspect him of aberrant behavior.
Scully: It's like assuming guilt based solely on skin color, isn't it?
Mulder: Yeah.(Mulder sighs, shrugs, and keeps digging. Flashlight beam lands on the pair of agents and the Sheriff clears his throat)
Sheriff:
Ahem. May I ask what you're doing?
Mulder: We're exhuming... (unfolds his handkerchief to reveal what he pulled out of the ground) Your potato.
Sheriff: May I ask why? (Mulder and Scully exchange uncomfortable looks)
Scully: (speaking very quickly) Sheriff, i-it's been documented that many serial killers possess a fascination with police work. Some of them even holding positions on their local force. Soo... surveillance of investigation team members is often utilized as a precautionary...
Mulder: (apologetically) We found out you used to be a dog-faced boy.

Season 2: Dod Kalm (2X19)

Story by: Howard Gordon
Teleplay by: Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa
Director: Rob Bowman

When the U.S.S. Ardent disappears off the Norwegian coast just below the 65th parallel, an area Mulder refers to as the second Bermuda Triangle, where nine other vessels have disappeared since 1949. Mulder arranges for Scully with her medical background to gain access to the sole survivor Lieutenant Richard Harper at the Bethsheda Naval Hospital in Maryland.

Scully is surprised to find that the 28 year old Harper is a wrinkly grey haired old man. Mulder believes it has something to do with the Philadelphia Experiment during World War II, a government project to render ships invisible to radar, which Mulder claims used technology recovered from the infamous Roswell Incident. Mulder and Scully travel to Norway to investigate, but find it difficult to get anyone to take them out to the area. Only Henry Trondheim captain of the local trawler Zeal is willing to take them.

They find the U.S.S. Ardent dead in the water, a rust covered old ship despite the fact that is was only commissioned in 1991. As they explore the ship the trawler Zeal is hijacked and sails away leaving them stranded on board. They encounter a local pirate whaler Olafssen, who seems unaffected by premature ageing. They realise his apparent immunity holds the key to the case. As Mulder and Scully begin to age rapidly Scully theorises that if the U.S.S. Ardent was drifting towards a meteorite on the ocean floor, the resulting electromagnetic energy could be exciting free-radicals, the elements believed to cause ageing.

Notes:
'Dod Kalm' is an intended foreign-sounding version of "Dead Calm".

According to an interview with David Duchovny, he and Gillian Anderson could not stop laughing during the scene where Trondheim yells at the whaling pirate. "He kept yelling B'LEAVER! and we couldn't keep a straight face."

Mulder mentions that Scully's journal is almost of pages, but she keeps writing in it for at least 14 more hours (the time shown in the onscreen caption later) without seeming to use any more pages.

Fingernails take an average of 100 days to grow 1cm (ie. 0.1mm per day) but all of the people that aged on the USS Ardent had several centimeters of nail growth, but their hair (and beards for the men) had not grown or greyed at all during the same period.

Quotes:
Mulder: Scully, what do you know about the Philadelphia Experiment?
Scully: It was a programme during World War II, to render battleships invisible to radar.
Mulder: On July 8, 1944, the USS Eldridge did more than just hide from radar screens. It vanished from the Philadelphia Navy Yard... Only to reappear minutes later, hundred of miles away in Norfolk, Virgina.

Scully: Mulder...When they found me, after the doctors and even my family had given up, I experienced something that I never told you about. Even now it's hard to find the words. But there's one thing I'm certain of. As certain as I am of this life, we have nothing to fear when it's over.
